October 2000
6
All water samples will be collected either directly from the pump discharge tube or from the
bottom valve of the bailer as close to the wellhead as practical. Sampling personnel will weaz
new, disposable gloves during sample collection. Samples will be collected in a manner to
reduce aeration and turbulence. Every effort will be made to reduce contact between the bottles
and sampling equipment. As an added precaution, contact time of the sample with ambient air
will be m;n;mi~ed by replacing caps immediately after the bottles are filled. VOC samples will
be collected without any air bubbles if posstble. Filling of VOC bottles will be performed using
the following procedure:
- Fill the bottle gently (at a stow rate}, allowing a meniscus to form over the
mouth of the container;
- Carefully place the cap on the bottle and tighten;
- Invert the bottle and tap on it; and
• - Examine the bottle for air bubbles.
The first portion of water taken from a well during sampling, approximately two liters, will
be discarded to help eliminate any oxidized water that may be present at the top of the water
column. This procedure may be omitted if a well exhibits very low yields during purging.
During the inspection phase, and again during purging and sampling, the area around the
sampling point will be checked for possible sources of air-borne contamination.
If sample Filtration is required, this will be performed using disposable 0.45-micron filters.
For sampling pumps, the filter will be attached directly to the discharge mbing of the pump
and then poured directly into the sample containers. Anew filter will be used for each well.
The filtering process for bailers will consist of pouring the baited sample into a clean beaker
and then moving the sample from the beaker, through a peristaltic pump into the filter using
• medical grade silicon tubing. Anew length of tubing and a new filter will be used for each
Sedalia Rerycling Center and Depository
