ROLD
Directs
Dear Mac: RE: WENG FARM EXPANSION
On Tuesday, September 23, we enjoyed some fine autumn weather on a visit
to your Weng Farm operations on St. Vrain Creek near Lyons. It was most
interesting and very educational for me to see your progress in mining and
reclamation on the site. As you know, I was last on the site five years
ago, shortly after the loadout facility and unit train had beer put into
operation.
• Mining on the 65-acre parcel south and southeast of the Phase 1
reclamation area is a logical expansion of the present operation. One
very interesting feature of the new operation will be the continued use of
conveyors to haul the material from the pit to the loadout silos. As we
saw in the currently active pit, the conveyors may be placed ver~~ close to
the working face. As you poin~ed Dut, they represent a considerable
savings in fuel consumption and costs over haulage by trucks. In
addition, I saw no dust coming from either the conveyor feed hopFler or any
of the transfer points.
When mining begins in the parcel farthest to the southeast, the conveyors
will stretch to nearly 4,000 ft to reach the 800-ft-long permanent section
that crosses the creek. However, as the mining progresses northward,
reclamation can be established first in the outlying areas, which will not
be affected then by subsequent phases. Also, this reclamatioT will be
completed first in the areas that are most visible along the county road.
Currently, two irrigation ditches cross the southeastern parcel. Mining
between these ditches and the other property lines and rights-of-way will
create three irregularly shaped ponds. Relocating a portion ~~f one of
these ditches will increase the minable acreage but still Flroduce a
natural-looking pond configuration. An immediate problem with the
reclamation plan is the lack of water rights. Apparently ore of the
landowners sold his rights and will have to purchase new water somewhere
• for this augmentation.
GEOLOGY
STORY OF 7HE PAST ...KEY TO THE FUTURE
