RAG, Empire Corporation ?000 AHR
INTRODUCTION
The Eagle #5 and #6 Mines are underground coal mines, located approximately seven miles
south of Craig, Colorado (Figure 1) and operated by RAG Empire Corporation (RAGEC). The
aerial extent of the underground workings in the #5 Mine was approximately 2,040 acres at the
end of 1990 and since active mining in the #5 Mine ceased in ]990 this acreage has not
changed. The SA portals and a short section of the #5 Mine mains are still used for access to
the #6 Mine. The coal extraction is front the Cretaceous Age Williams Fork Formation, in the
"E" Seam in the #6 Mine. During 2000, no active mining took place as the RAG Empire
Corporation was idled due to unfavorable market conditions. Hydrologic monitoring has been
conducted at the mine site since 1980. This report presents the results of yeaz 2000 monitoring.
The complete 1983 through 2000 monitoring is presented in the respective Annual Hydrology
Reports for each calendar year. The hydrologic monitoring is divided into two parts: 1)
groundwater, and 2) surface water. The monitoring locations are shown on Figure 2 with
mcnitoring requirements for each site summarized in Table 1. The water quality monitoring
includes field parameters (Table 2), water quality parameters (Table 3), and NPDES pazanteters
(Table 4). The water quality samples are now analyzed by CT&E Laboratories, Denver,
Colorado a USEPA certified laboratory (Prior to 10/1/99, sample analysis was conducted by
ACZ Laboratories, Inc., Steamboat Springs, Colorado - also, a USEPA certified laboratory).
This report includes data collected specifically to meet requirements of the Colorado Division
of Minerals & Geology (DMG), as well as data collected to meet the requirements of the
• Colorado Wastewater Dischazge Permit System (CDPS permit).
Data contained in Figure 16 reflects some different values then reported in last year's AHR.
During overview of the historic data, some inconsistencies were noted and corrected
accordingly.
~J
IaEnvimnmental\EMPIREViliR\2000\Text\Empire2000A1-IR.doc Page 1
