AM.ATION DIVISION
Colo. Dept.~of ^latursl Resources
Dear Bob:
Please find enclosed two (2) copies of the Annual Hydrology Report
for West Elk Coal Company's Mt. Gunnison No. 1 Underground Mine.
The report provides a summary and interpretation of hydrologic
monitoring data at the Mt. Gunnison Mine through U`iGS Water Year
1983 (October 1, 1982 - September 30, 1983) a~ well as an
assessment of the hydrologic impacts of our minjng activities
during this period.
I
As you and I discussed last week, we recently le rned that the
USGS discontinued their water quality monitoring of the North Fork
of the Gunnison River near Somerset in September, 1982. They are,
however, maintaining their gauging station and thus~are continuing
to collect water quantity data in the North Fork. Stipulation 9
(OSM's Stipulation 4) to the Permit to Mine issued by the CMLRB to
Atlantic Richfield for its Mt. Gunnison Mine requir s that should
the USGS discontinue monitoring at their Somer et monitoring
station, the operator should submit its own qualit and quantity
monitoring program for the North Fork of the unnison. As
discussed in the Annual Hydrology Report, West Elk Coal Company
collects water quality samples on a quarterly basi in the North
Fork above Sylvester Gulch and in the North Fork ~elow the mine
site. The sampling locations are shown in Exhibit I to this
Annual Report. This, we trust, satisfies the condfition noted in
Stipulation 9.
If you have any questions or need additional information, please
do not hesitate to contact me at 293-7949. i
Sinc ely,
~.~ ~~~~i
Paige 6.
