Mr. Dave Stout - 3 - May 13, 1987
CANADIAN STRIP
S ep cies % Cover #PLS/AC
Thickspike Wheatgrass 18.0 2.75
Western Wheatgrass 10.0 0.8
Canada Bluegrass 4.8 ----
Beardless Wheatgrass 3.6 3.0
In comparing the seeding rates with the resulting cover in the cases above it
was generally noted that the approved mix for the Canadian Strip proposed
lower seeding rates for the forb and big sagebrush component of the mix than
those mines experiencing more representation of those components. In order to
increase diversity one suggestion would be to double or triple the seeding
rate for forbs and big sagebrush.
SEEDING METHODS
Two different seeding methods have been employed at the Marr and Bourg Strip,
yielding encouraging results with forbs and shrubs.
At the Marr Strip, all seeding is performed with a rangeland drill, The
graminoids are drilled first and then shrub and forb seeds are drilled, but
perpendicular to the rows in which grasses have been sown, In theory this
optimizes the distance between competitive grasses and less dominant forbs and
shrubs, allowing the forbs and shrubs to develop without grass overcrowding,
At the Bourg Strip, all grasses and forbs are drill seeded. All shrub seeds
are hand broadcast. The belief is that by seeding the much smaller shrub
seeds by hand, the likelihood of then being planted too deep is reduced,
therefore greater germination is realized.
I hope these comments have been useful
feel free to call.
If you have any questions, please
Sincerel ,
,,f~~~~a
Michael S.
