Pueblo West Pit
2004 Annual Report
Transit Mix of Pueblo
M-1977-573
Overview of Permit Year: Over the past year Transit Mix of Pueblo was actively
reclaiming and revegetating the Pueblo West Pit. Mining has been completed.
Reclamation, revegetation and weed control are the primary concerns right now.
Mining Activity: Mining (material extraction) has ceased at this pit and the entire
plant (crushers and screens) has been removed.
Revegetation/Seeding: Previous revegetation attempts at this site have not been
successful primarily because of drought and over-bearing weeds. In October 2003 .V
30-35 acres of land (Litvac/Divelbliss and 2 acres on the north side of Lake 1) was
disced and drill seeded. Please see attached document for the seed mix. The majority
of the seeding took place in the Litvac/Divelbliss area. Eight types of grass seed were
fed through our drill seeder. One type, Alkali Sacaton, had to be hand spread (actually
hand spread, no broadcast seeder.) In addition to the Litvac/Divelbliss area a small
section along the north side of Lake #1 was seeded.
Weed Control: Weeds (mainly Kochia) were a problem last year. In 2003 more
intense efforts were waged against the weed populations at the West Pit. Mowing was
used as our control method. Mowing began in the middle of summer and ended a
month later. Mowing was somewhat difficult because the Kochia was very well
established. Transit Mix intends on mowing and using herbicides to control the
weeds.
Reclamation: Reclamation continued in 2003 and will continue in 2004. All
reclamation is taking place north of the river mainly in the east and south portions of
the pit. There is approximately 15,000 tons of material in the bottom of the pit. This
material will be used primarily for reclamation although some portions may be sold as
road base.
Expected Activity: Weed control and reclamation will be the main activities taking
place in 2004. Mowing will be carried out intensely and reclamation will continue as
scheduled.
