response of individual pairs of falcons to disturbance near the eyrie varies
with topography at the site and the temperament of the individual birds. It
• is generally accepted that a buffer zone should be one-half mile wide around
an active eyrie.
Mining activity on Occidental land began on 1 June, 1972. Sitings of pere-
Brine falcons were made in 1974. The Bureau of Land Management, in two
Environmental Analysis Records pertaining to permits on Occidental's Logan
Wash Oil Shale Site, have noted that human activity has not driven the
falcons away.
Occidental's Environmental staff plans to use binoculars and a 45-power
spotting telescope in an effort to locate any primary or alternate peregrine
falcon eyries. Further plans to make continued seasonal observations which
might help prevent serious disturbance of a breeding pair are being formulated.

Surface Hydrology
A soil sample was collected in the Dry Gulch drainage area near the E~ corner
Section 24, T7S, R97W, The location is shown on Figure 1. The weight analysis
was as follows:
Sand 49.7°U
Silt 31.90
Clay 17.4%
Classification: Loam
This material is typical of the slopes in Dry Gulch in Section 24 to within
approximately 1,000 feet of the line between Sections 24 and 25.
South of this point the soil changes noticeably as the slopes become steeper.
• The soil is very shallow and rocky. Essentially no A zone exists. These
~ steep rocky slopes comprise the upper part of the drainage area in Section 25
down to the Mahogany Ledge which is a sheer rock face about 100 feet high.
-9-
