Moun[ain Coa! Company 1997 Annual Hydrology Report Wes! E!k Mine
Well SOM-128-H was established in the vicinity of the surface facilities in late 1990 to monitor
• water levels within the Rollins Sandstone down-dip of the longwall mine workings. During the
first two years of observation, the water level in this well increased more than 150 feet. This
water level rise may be the result of the confined hydrostatic pressure and low transmissivity of
the Rollins Formation at this location. This observation has not been replicated at either of the
other Rollins Formation monitoring wells. Equilibrium in well SOM-128-H was reached some
time in the eazly part of 1993. Since that time (including WY97), the water level has slowly and
steadily declined. This beginning of this decline generally coincides with the initiation of
longwall mining of the B-Seam. However, the well is down dip more than one-half mile. Also,
mine inflows to the B-Seam, except as occurred through the B East Mains and 14 SEHG faults in
1996 and 1997, have been small (generally less than 50 gpm). Most of these inflows have
generally been reported to have occurred in the roof or rib and not from the floor. Water level
observations made during WY96 and WY97 show no effect from the interception of the B East
Mains and 14 SEHG fault systems indicating that these systems are isolated from the Rollins
Sandstone in the vicinity of SOM-128-H. Further observations will be closely reviewed and
evaluated in an effort to further explore the relevance of these observations. Water quality
results obtained from WY97 were within the range of data previously obtained for baseline
purposes.
•
•
1-032.9 0 age Wrig ! a[er Engineers
