Mounroin Coa! Company 1997 Annual Hydrology Report West Elk Mine
• Spring G-8 was discussed in the 1996 AHR since the spring historically (1983 through 1987) had
flow, but had ceased since monitoring was re-initiated. Spring G-7 showed the opposite flow
regime of G-8, i.e. historically dry, but flowing in WY96 and WY97. Since G-7 is located
downgradient of G-8, it is most likely that the source water that historically fed spring G-8 is
now emerging as G-7.
Spring Water Quality Data
In addition to regularly monitoring the flows of 37 springs, MCC collects extensive water quality
data on the springs. The chemistry of spring flows can change if mining has impacted the spring.
The tables in Appendix E have been prepazed to summarize the available data for all measured
pazameters. These tables provide minimum, average, and maximum concentrations under both
baseline and WY97 conditions.
Inspection of the data reveals that, in general, water quality concentrations during WY97 were
comparable to those in previous years. The available water quality data for TDS, total iron, and
total manganese were not adequate (due to insufficient flow for sampling) to provide an
indication on linkage to mining impacts. The available data indicated that there were no
deviations during WY97 from baseline conditions. Available water quality data indicate that
impacts to spring water quality due to mining have not occurred.
Stock Ponds
• Map 3 shows the locations of the stock ponds and U.S. Forest Service water resources relative to
[he B-Seam longwall panels. As [he map indicates, few of these resources were within the
influence of mining in WY96. As expected, no impacts were noted due to mining.
u
1-031.450 Page rig ( ater ngineers
