• Introduction
This report covers the 2001 period from April 2001 to July 2001. Mine Construction of the
Bowie No. 2 Mine began during May of 1997, with coal production beginning during August
1997.
The mining permit application for the Bowie No. 2 Mine requires the operator to submit the
results of the subsidence monitoring programs and the results of the visual inspections of known
modem and historic landslides within the permit and adjacent azea for stability in June and
December of each year and report these results to the Division within 30 days of the ends of the
reporting periods.
The operator is also required to inspect these landslides, both modern and historic monthly for
six months immediately after retreat mining occurs. This same inspection routine is applied to
any spring or pond in the immediate proximity of retreat mining.
Visual Inspection of known historic and modern landslides.
A visual inspection of all known historic and modem landslides was conducted during June 2001
by David A. Jenkel, 2768 Compass Drive, Suite 101, Grand Junction, CO 81506. No new or
rejuvenated landslides were found during this inspection.
Increased Inspection activity associated with retreat mining.
• Pond 2 (P-2) and Spring 13 (5-13) fall within the area affected by retreat mining during the 2000
Results of Subsidence Survey Monitoring
The results of 2000 monitoring aze attached. They were performed by Cragg Surveying using
GPS methods. The results of the June 2001 monitoring event are not yet compiled by Cragg
Surveying and will be forwarded to the Division when available.
monitoring season and therefore increased inspection activity occurred. However, Spring 13 has
not exhibited a flow since April 1997 and Pond 2 is perennially dry. Pond 2 was cleaned out
during the building of a drill road during 2000 and has remained dry throughout 2001.
Subsidence cracks developed across the roadway to DH-13 after the mining in the Dl panel
occurred. Subsidence cracks developed across the roadway to GVB-D-3A after mining the D2
and D3 panels. Photographs of these more recent subsidence cracks are attached to this report.
Accessible subsidence cracks were repaired and aze monitored as Spring 13 is monitored. No
other hydrologic monitoring points have been undermined during this period.
