5
Deep Sand of the Central High Plains Range Site as described
by the Soil Conservation Service .
Also to be considered in reclamation seedings is
the protection of the soil from wind and water erosion during
the period that the stand of vegetation is progressing
toward the ultimate plant community. It is , therefore, only
fair to weigh the immediate with the final goals . A number
of rapidly establishing species with strong seedling vigor and
seasonal growth play an important part in the early stages
of vegetation establishment. Several introduced pasture
grasses have proved performance in the general area of the
mine. These are Smooth brome and, with the exception of
Thickspike, the wheatgrasses . Evaluation of the seedings in
the following section includes also the native species
on which greatest reliance can be depended on for the
establishment of an enduring plant cover .
Smooth brome
This grass produced only 1 . 5 per cent of the
cover and o. 8 per cent of the biomass in the ' 85 RA.
Smooth brome made up a scant 1 . 2 per cent of the cover
in the ' 86 RA and 0 . 5 per cent of the biomass . It can be con-
cluded frome these studies that smooth brome is of little
value in seeding in this reclamation program. It is a
grass more adapted for irrigated pastures and more humid ,
non-irrigated zones .
Crested and Intermediate wheatgrasses
These cool season grasses have a low evaluation
