COORS ENERGY COMPANY
KEENESBURG MINE
MINED LAND RECLAMATION
Procedures for Collecting Vegetative Data for Mined Land
Reclamation Evaluation
1 . 0 Place the 2 . 4 square foot circular plot on the random
point location. The hoop will be in contact with
the ground by separating the plants to divide those
inside and outside the plot . List plants observed
in immediate vicinity of the plot on the data sheet.
2 . 0 Determine and record the total per cent plant foliar
cover by ocular examination as viewed from directly
above the center of the plot.
3 . 0 Clip , bag , weigh, and record all current growth of
all weeds by species in the plot .
4 . 0 Determine and record per cent foliar cover of re-
clamation species and/or native plants as in 2 .0 above .
5 . 0 Count each species ' density per plot and record.
Counts will be of the number of bunches of bunch-
grasses , and individual stems of sod-forming grasses .
6 . 0 Clip to ground level , bag, weigh, and record in grams
the current season ' s growth of each species in the
plot. Old plant growth will be separated from the
current season ' s . Growth of sand sagebrush and other
shrubs , if rooted within the plot, will be determined
bythe-weight-uii-tetvd—Tfiis metho u
weight of a selected branch for a unit. The numbe
of units on the entire shrub are then counted t
et the total current production. /)
P
7 . 0 weigh all bags from each plot in shelter out of sun
and wind soon after harvesting. Record weights in
grams on the label for each bag.
8 . 0 Air-dry all bags indoors in a warm, dry location;
and weigh after ten days. Calculate per cent air dry.
Tom Eaman
Range Scientist
August, 1988
