The permit number 76-9HR, was approved on June 23, 1977, but apparently
there was a delay in bonding as the first bond seems to have been submitted on
February 17, 1978. That date is probably the effective date for annual rcaports.
This is consistent with the Drennan Road Pit, file number 77-1, which was approved
at the same time.
According to Exhibit C in the permit the area was originally a very sparsE:ly vegetated
area that was a nearly vertical face of granite about 150' high combined With a steep
hillside about 400' high. The mining would open the area and would produce a large
number of terraces or steps with approximately 20' wide treads and 20' hick risers.
Effectively, this greatly increases the amount of level land which should translate
into increased vegetation cover. More important, the step treads will help retain and
control runoff so as to reduce severe erosion.
The plan called for completion of the mine in about 11 years or 1988. With about 20
acres to mine, it appears that an average of about 1.75 acres would be mined per year.
The reclamation plan calls for placement of a minimum of 2' of waste fines on the step
treads. The material contains about 30% of the bulk which passes the minus 200 mesh sieve.
It should be capable of supporting growth when combined with fertilizers. There is no
specific reclamation timetable, but it can be assumed that reclamation would occur as
areas become available.
RESPONSES TO RULE 2.41:
Rule 2.41(1): Location and number of acres affected during that year.
This is an especially difficult question to answer because of the nature of this mine.
The permit called for about 20 acres of mining at 1.75 acres per year. This is rather
deceiving, because steep sloped rock quarries rarely can be operated a few acres at at
time without creating severe safety hazards.
Actually, this area was operated, to some extent, over the entire 20 acres. Intensive
mining operations occurred over about 14.5 acres in the four years covered by this
permit. The remaining acreage is in the stockpile and processing area on .he east end
of the operation.
