• Ground Water Monitor and Ouality Anal,
Since the initiation of the formal ground water sampling program in January, 1982,
ground water quality information has been obtained from several monitor wells at the
Keenesburg site. The present ground water monitor program has provided
information which has served to define the overall baseline and existing site
conditions concerning ground water movement and quality on site.
Water quality test results obtained from the data collected in the field and from the
comprehensive analytical ground water quality analyses indicate that the overall
ground water quality has not been adversely impacted from the undeveloped site (i.e.,
pre-mine) conditions. In addition, major ground water movement patterns have not
been significantly influenced or interrupted by the former mining activities or current
ash disposal operations in A- and B-Pits.
Six ground water monitor wells are sampled quarterly by CEC employees. These
wells are designated SMW-2, AMW-1, AMW-2, FPW, DH-96, and DH-122. Water
quality analyses include both field and analytical laboratory testing of several water
• samples collected from these wells.
Each water sample collected in the field is tested for pH using a pH neutral solution
of 7.0. A specific conductivity meter is used to measure electrical conductivity at the
measured water sample temperature, obtained from an additional (temperature)
meter. All information collected during field testing is recorded in a field log book by
CEC personnel and kept at the Keenesburg office.
CEC continues to be concerned about the monitoring of wells located outside the
Permit boundary. Currently, two (2) monitor well sites (DH 122 and DH 96) are
located on private property not owned by CEC and thus are not within the Permit
area. CEC would like to work with the Division to avoid property issues, yet comply
with the Division's rules and regulations in monitoring and sampling ground waters
potentially affected by its reclamation operations.

AHR-1996 -34- Stipulation #5
