As we have discussed
previously, on the night of July 12, 1992 there was a 100%year 24
hour storm event at Salt Creek's McClane Canyon Mine. The sediment
pond at the mine was completely filled with water and sediment.
This pond is designed to retain the volume of six 10 year~24 hour
events. 'Prior to the storm there was approximately the volume of
one 10 year event stored in the pond. An unknown quantity of water
and sediment bypassed the pond through the emergency spillway and
overflowed the embankment after the pond was filled.
On July 13, 1992, Mr. John Kubic of your office was informed of the
storm and the need for Salt Creek to discharge the water i'n the pond
to regain the capacity of the pond for the next storm. The standing
water in the pond was discharged and sampled. By letters dated July
20, 1°°'? and A::g:~t 3, 199; as we1T as, phone calls, your office
has been informed of the discharge and the sample results. Copies
of the letters and sampling results are being submitted with this
request for exemption.
Please call if there are questions or if I can be of assistance.
yS,~-ncerPly,
~~~~~~~
Join h1.
