1.0 INTRODUCTION
In August 1985, reclaimed areas at the Hayden Gulch Mine were sampled to
evaluate the trend of vegetation establishment and to identify any major
deficiencies in revegetation efforts. Two seed mixtures have been used on
reclaimed areas at the mine. The mixtures listed on Table 1 were used from
1979 - 1981, and the mixture on Table 2 has been used since 1981. This
change in seed mixture is reflected in the stands of vegetation present on
the reclaimed areas during the evaluation. The major criteria evaluated
were 1) canopy cover, 2) species diversity, 3) shrub density and 4) produc-
tivity.
2.0 METHODS
Sampling was divided into two distinct areas, those in the second growing
season and those in the third growing season or older. Areas reclaimed in
1979, 1980 and 1981 were sampled as a single unit and totaled 65 acres.
Acreage reclaimed in 1982 totaled 65 acres and acreage reclaimed in 1983
totaled 45 acres. A map of the sampling areas is shown on Exhibit 1. A
list of species encountered during sampling in all areas is found on
Table 3.
2.1 CANOPY COVER
Canopy cover was determined utilizing the point-frame method. Sampling
points were located using a random numbers table to determine compass
direction and the number of paces. Four hundred points were sampled in
areas where vegetation was in the third growing season or older. One
hundred fifty points were sampled in areas in the second growing season.
Copies of the data sheets are included in Appendix B.
2.2 SPECIES DIVERS
Species diversity values were obtained by interpreting point-frame data and
evaluated utilizing the criterion outlined in the permit. This criterion
required that the relative cover of four cool season grasses and one forb
