These two
facilities are located respectively approximately 2.5 miles southeast and 3 miles southwest of Lake City in
Hinsdale County, Colorado.
The Division has reviewed your discharge permit applications and has conferred with persons in the Colorado
Division of Minerals and Geology (CDMG). Based upon these assessments, which are summarized in the
following paragraphs, the Division has made the following determinations rgazding these two discharge
permits.
For the LKA International, Inc. Golden Wonder Mine (CDPS Discharge Permit No. CO-0043877), the
Division has determined that an individual indusvial discharge permit is applicable for this site. This is based
upon the fact that mine water discharges from the mine adit going [o surface waters (Deadman Gulch) have
been previously observed and sampled. Thus, the Division is presently drafting a discharge permit for the
Golden Wonder Mine, and a copy of this draft will be sent to you in the next few months once it is scheduled
for an upcoming public notice period.
For the LKA International, Inc. Ute Ule Mine and Mill facility (CDPS Discharge Permit No. CO-0043915),
the Division has determined that no individual industrial discharge permit needs to be processed at this time.
This is based upon two considerations. First, there have been no discharges of mine water from the mine adit
going to surface waters (Ute Creek or Henson Creek); and based upon previously known water levels in the
mine, it appears that a discharge from the adit to surface waters is unlikely to occur.
