' the main embattlartent foundation (not including the downstream toe ditches). Details of the liner
installation are discussed in further detail in Section 4.0, Liner Installation.
' TMR began placing Type 1 fill in the upper end of the main embankment channel on July 21, 1990.
FiIL placement progressed from the upstream toe to the Typel/Type 4 interface in the channel
' bottom. The initial lift of material was placed in a lift plus 3-ft deep in order to tninimize the load
induced from the heavy equipment used for this operation. The upstream portion of the main
' embanlonent was raised above the original ground level to act as a coffer dam to protect the work
downstream from potential surface water damage. This also allowed the Gundle lining crews to
complete the liner installation on the remainder of embattlrntent footprint while giving the earth
' moving contractor an area to place fill.
' The liner installation progressed at a slower than expected rate on the main foundation and the
earthmoving contractor began running out of production work while waiting the liner installation
to be completed. Therefore, BMG authorized TMR to shape the north abutment of the lower
impoundment for phase 3 of the project. In addition to completing the phase 3 shaping on the
north abutment during this slack period of time, the earth moving contractor also constructed the
' dikes for the south diversion channel, stockpiled Type 2 and 3 material and completed the stripping
in the impoundment area.
' In general, the materials for the main embankment construction were dry non~ohesive gravels and
silty sands. The materials for the main embankment were borrowed from the upper impoundment
' excavation and from the north and south abutment slopes of the lower impoundment. Type 1 fill
materials were borrowed from tfie upper impoundment alluvial deposits and from the north
abutment Santa Fe gravel formation. Type 2 materials were borrowed primarily from the alluvial
' deposits in the impoundment floor. Type 4 materials were borrowed from the upper impoundment
excavation and the lower impoundment south abutment knob removal. QC sample gradation data
' of the fill materials are summarized in Appendix A of this report.
The fill material for the main embankment was excavated, hauled, and placed using 631 CAT
' scrapers and push dozers. The 631 Cat scrapers dumped the material in lifts 4 to 6 Ines deep and
motor graders were used to spread and smooth the material prior to compaction. Twelve ton (static
' weight) vibratory smooth drum rollers were used to compact the material in place. A minimum of
two passes per lift was made on the material with the vibratory compactors before placing additional
lifts.
' A test pad was made prior to beginning the fill operations on the embat-lartent. This test pad was
constructed using the equipment listed above to simulate the fill activities to be performed on the
' 10
