• Introduction
The information assembled in this 1991 Annual Hydrology Report (AHR) includes data
collected from approved monitoring sites established at Peabody Coat Company's (PCC)
Seneca II-LI Mine (State Permit No. C-82-057). Locations of monitoring sites discussed in
[his report can be found by referring to Exhibit 7-1, Hydrology Monitoring Map.
All references to 7991 will be for Yater Year 1991 (October 7, 1990 through September 30,
7991) unless otherwise noted. All tables referred to in the following text can be found
in Appendix A. In addition, a table of contents for Appendix A is given at the beginning
of that appendix. Figure 1 (Appendix A) shows the area mined in 1991.
Field conductivity and pH meters were calibrated prior to each days use. The conductivity
meter is calibrated using a 0.07 molar potassium chloride solution with an electrical
conductivity of 1413 umhos/c m. The pH meter is calibrated using NBS traceable buffers
with pH values of 7 and 10.
Prior to October 1, 1989, all field conductivity values found in water quality reports are
not corrected for temperature (i.e., 25° C). Field conductivity data from October 1, 1989
to March 7, 1990 were collected using a Yellow Springs Instrument Model 33 Meter that does
no[ compensate for temperature. That data has been corrected to 25° C using the following
formula:
where:
K =conductivity at 25° C
Km = measured conductivity at t°
C = cell constant = true conductivity of a standard/measured conductivity of a
standard (assume 1.0 if cell constant is not given)
t° = temperature at which Km was determined, in °Celcius
r = rate of conductivity increase per °L, assume 0.02 (i.e., 2 percent) for most
dilute solutions
This formula is from "Standard Methods far the Examination of eater end was[ewa[e r",
American Public Health Association, e[ al., 1985, Pg. 79. This formula differs from that
• given in past AHR's and should he used for the temperature correction of all field
conductivities for the Seneca II-W Nine collected prior to October 1, 1989.
