Memo to Harrv Posev -4- Januarv 24, 1997
dumps located some 370' higher in the gulch. The contamination
could also be caused by a combination of these processes, or there
may be other explanations, but of the three possible causes listed,
contact with the mine dumps seems the least likely because
observations of the dumps during low flow periods in Windy Gulch
indicate that the dumps are quite dry.
To summarize my conclusions from a review of the CARR as it relates
to the Bulldog Mine:
Windy Gulch background samples SO-10, SW-14, and 5E-14 were
taken from the lower reach of upger Windy Gulch, hence would
be representative of conditions in upper Windy Gulch. Just
below the Windy Gulch background sampling station, the gulch
enters a completely different geologic, biologic, hydrologic,
and geomorphic setting, rendering the background samples non-
representative of the lower gulch where high metals
concentrations have been detected.
Metals loading sources other than the Bulldog Mine dumps need
to be investigated in lower Windy Gulch.
cc: Steve Shuey, Durango Office
Bruce Humphries
C: \NP51\BVLLDO('.
