Long
FROM: Allen Sorenson I Division Dntttor
RE: Comprehensive Analytical Results Report, CERCLA Site
Inspection is Mineral County Colorado
I have reviewed the above referenced draft report, and have
prepared this memorandum to provide information on the Bulldog
Mine, Permit No. M-77-215, operated by Homestake Mining Company in
the Creede Mining District. Mining and milling operations at the
Bulldog Mine were suspended in the late 1980s. In the early 1990s,
Homestake decided to permanently close the facility, and had
completed the bulk of the required site reclamation by the autumn
of 1994.
The Comprehensive Analytical Results Report (GARB) includes data
from sediment and surface water samples collected from three
locations in Windy Gulch where the Bulldog Mine is located, and
data from four Bulldog Mine waste dump samples, two each from the
9700' and the 9360' portal waste dumps. The CARR also reports data
from a native soil sample collected from Windy Gulch intended to
represent background conditions. Surface water and sediment
samples SW-14 and 5E-14 were collected from Windy Gulch at
approximate elevation 10,240', just above were the main road
crosses the gulch. Soil sample SO-10 was collected near the same
location, and all three of the samples are supposed to represent
background conditions in Windy Gulch. However, above the main road
the windy Gulch stream bed and lower gulch walls consist of
Quaternary glacial moraine, and below the main road the Bachelor
Mountain Rhyolite, which is locally altered and mineralized, is
exposed. Given this geologic setting, samples SW-14, 5E-14, and
SO-10 cannot be considered representative background for the
analysis of lower Windy Gulch where the Bulldog Mine is located.
Surface water sample SW-15 and stream sediment sample 5E-15 were
collected below the Bulldog 9700' waste dump, and exhibit greatly
higher metal concentrations than the ostensive background samples
discussed in the previous paragraph. However, an investigation
needs to be made as to how much of the increased metals
concentrations can be attributed to the presence of the 9700' waste
