This was because of the large
quantity of material that was available within areas that had previously been prepared for mining. The
land on the north side of the affected land which was opened in 1999 was mined to a very small extent.
Most of the mining occurred on the south side of the operation where mining has been done the last few
years.
Annual Report Maps: The enclosed color map shows the primary areas of disturbance and the type of
disturbance occurring in each area. This map is only slightly changed from last year, but rather than
showing the information on a map that contains only the southeastern corner of the permit, this map
shows the entire permit area. This style of presentation seems to be more effective than the one used last
year as it shows the relationship of the existing affected land to the entire permit area.
Affected Lands: The amount of affected land increased very little from last year.
Revegetation: The site is stable and is not subject to erosion. A DMG inspection near the end of the
permit year did not find any problems. No revegetation was done in 2000 as no land wss available to
revegetate.
Expected Activity (2001): The mining zone (orange on the map) may expand slightly northward into
the brown area. An additional zone of stripping into Section 31 and west of the current operation is
shown on the map. This stripping is necessary to efficiently remove the materials in the land previously
stripped in the southwestern corner of the affected land. Because the ridge in this corner-forms a unit for
mining, the stripping must be done west of this area so mined land is not created immediately adjacent
to unstripped land. If that condition was created it would be nearly impossible to safely remove
vegetation and soils from new mining areas and soil resources would very likely be lost.
Bonding: This operation is covered by a self bond. Enclosed is a copy of the most current Divisional
Balance Sheet for Schmidt Construction. Centennial Materials and Schmidt Construction are financially
related and are both subsidiaries of Edw. C.
