No. hits on vegetation (~) <br />' total number of points <br />The composition of plant species in each azea was evaluated using data acquired from the <br />' vegetative cover transects. Data from the transects were used in equation 3 to determine the <br />relative cover of each species detected. <br />' % Relative Cover of Species X = % Cover of Species X (3) <br />% Total Veg. Cover <br />1 Herbaceous Production <br />' Production data were collected in 1993 and 1995. Ten quadrants measuring one square meter in <br />size were clipped in each of the eight test plots. The reference plot was also sampled in 1995. <br />Clipped vegetation was then sepazated into its growth form, either perennial or annual, and stored <br />' in paper bags. The wet weight was obtained by weighing the bags soon after they were clipped. <br />The dry weight was taken by weighing the bags after being dried for 24 hours at 10~ degrees <br />Fahrenheit. <br />' Sample adequacy for the production plots was calculated using the Snedecor-Cochran sample <br />adequacy formula (Equation 1). The total dry weight of each production sample (weight of <br />perennials plus weight of annuals) was used in the sample adequacy formula. <br /> <br />1 <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />Woody Plant Density and Rooting Depth <br />Woody plant density data were collected in 1992, 1993, and 1995. Woody plant density was <br />estimated from two-meter wide belts, one meter on each side of the cover transect. Woody plant <br />hits were recorded during cover data collection. Numbers of stems counted in the belt transects <br />were converted to stems per acre for analysis. <br />Rooting depths of the woody plant species were collected in 1995. Several soil pits were <br />excavated in each plot to expose plant roots. The depths of these exposed roots were measured <br />and recorded. <br />Soils <br />Soil samples were collected in 1996. Sampling locations were at the approximate center point <br />of the plots sampled which is consistent with the 1990 soil sampling. Test plots N-2 (24 inch), <br />N-3 (36 inch), S-2 (24 inch), S-3 (36 inch), and S-4 (48 inch) were sampled in one foot <br />increments with each sample being analyzed separately. The one foot increment directly above <br />the refuse material was sampled in six-inch increments. The one foot increment of refuse directly <br />below the soil was also sampled in six inch increments. Samples were analyzed for texture, pH, <br />electrical conductivity, sodium adsorption ratio (SAR), and selenium. Exchangeable sodium <br />percentage (ESP) was also analyzed for the refuse samples.
