III IIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
STATE OF COLORADO
Roy Romer, Govei
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
MINED LAND RECLAMATION DIVISION
FRED R. BANTA, Director
DATE: July 19, 1988
T0: Susan Mowry
FROM: Jim Pendleton _-.
RE: Mt. Gunnis~rl'Lower Reese Pile Monitoring Results
As you requested, I have reviewed the facial stability and compaction
monitoring results for the Lower Refuse Pile at the Mt. Gunnison No. 1 mine.
These monitoring reports show the pile's face to be stable and the waste
compaction to be in compliance with the approved plan.
Slope Stability
The monitoring results of the "B" series slope stability monuments suggest the
pile has consistently gained elevation by approximately 0.3 feet. I think
this is probably attributable to a minor baseline surveying inaccuracy,
because its replicated in each monument's vertical data. However, the
relationship between the monuments shows little change from past surveys,
suggesting the pile continues to perform properly. I recommend that you bring
this to the attention of the operator so that the inaccuracy can be resolved
during their next normal survey observation of the slope stability monuments.
Waste Compaction
The compaction reports indicate that testing was performed on June 14, 1988.
Several areas were determined to be below required levels of compaction.
These areas were recompacted and the pile retested on the following ddy, June
15, 1988. Retesting demonstrated that the required compaction had been
attained. This is exactly the way the testing process is supposed to
function. The operator's personnel learn what compactive effort is necessary
to achieve compliance on the materials they are placing in the waste pile.
I recommend that you accept the results as submitted.
215 Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman Street Denver, Colorado 80203-2273 Tel.
