Here is the Spill Notification Form for the Liquid AC spill I reported August 17, 2005.
The spill was confined to the tanker unloading containment area of the asphalt plantsite at
our Norwood Gravel Pit.
The liquid AC cooled immediately into a semi solid once it hit the ground and did not
soak into the ground. None of the spill came into contact with ground or surface water.
Cleanup took place once the tanker was removed from the containment azea. The
containment azea is a manmade "pond" area the asphalt tanker backs into prior to
unloading. Cleanup consisted of a frontend loader sprinkling natural fines on top of the
AC, gathering the AC into a pile, and moving it to our plantwaste stockpile. I've
included two photos. One is a rear view of the tanker showing the level of the AC on the
mud flaps. The second photo shows the plantwaste stockpile. Eventually we may run the
plantwaste stockpile through our crusher and make "black base".
If you need more information, let me know. A hand written copy of the Spill Notification
Form is in the SPCC binder in the hot plant control, van. Others receiving a copy
include: Montrose County Health Department, Town of Norwood, Colorado Division of
Minerals and Geology, and MSHA.
