h1r. Murari Shrestha - 2 - March 12, 1990
2. For mine waste analyses, the following parameters should be analyzed in
addition to the topsoil/subsoil parameters listed above:
Exchangable Sodium Percentage
Boron
Selenium
Sulfate sulfur
Pyritic sulfur
Total sulfur
Acid/base potential
Analysis should be run on two separate composite samples, one from the
north slope plot area and one from the south slope plot area.
3. An existing reference area may be suitable for purposes of the study. I
would suggest a joint site visit to compare existing reference areas with
potential alternative reference sites in April or May.
4. Vegetation cover should be one of the parameters evaluated in
determinations of reveaetation success, along with herbaceous production
and woody plant density.
Test Plot Reclamation Plan
5. In the final submittal, a map depicting the test plot locations and a
diagram specifying plot layout will be needed.
6. Shouldn't the second depth increment be 24 inch rather than 14 inch?
7. Test plot seeding should be conducted during the normal fall planting
period, following approved final reclamation reveaetation procedures.
Areas adjacent to the test plots should be topsoiled concurrently with
the test plots to prevent excessive dessication of the test plot soils.
Post-Reclamation Investigation
8. If plots are seeded in Fall '90, first sampling should be Summer '91,
with subsequent sampling in Summer '92, '93 and '95. I would recommend
cover and woody density sampling in '91 and '92 with cover, woody
density, and production sampling in '93 and '95.
9. Sampling procedures should be described in detail with respect to method,
plot size and shape, transect length, etc. For example, an acceptable
strategy for cover sampling within plots could entail 5-10 systematically
or randomly located 100' transects with 5 systematically or randomly
spaced 10 point frame placements per transect. For production sampling,
a minimum of 10 randomly located lm2 quadrats per plot would be
appropriate. Woody density data could be estimated from 2 meter wide
belt transects run alona_ each cover transect. Sample adeauacv should be
set such that estimates are within l0U of the true mean at the 90; level
of statistical confidence.
