OF,Coto
NQ' _ o DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
David Director MINED LAND RECLAMATION DIVISION
* 1876 + DAVID C. SHELTON, Director
Richard D.Lamm
Governor
DATE: October 21 , 1986
T0: Tom Schreiner
FROM: Dan Mathews
RE: COORS KEENESBURG VEGETATION DATA FILE C-028-81
Attached are data summaries from vegetation cover sampling conducted during
September, 1986 at the Keenesburg Mine.
The spring, 1985 seeded area was sampled along with the fenced referenced
area. It will be several years before it can be determined if a successful
stand dominated by warm season perennial grasses has become established, but
this year's data (when compared to.the stand that develops over a number of
years) should provide some insightAo the competitive interaction between the
various cool and warm season short and tallgrasses.
The 1978 cover depth test plots were also sampled. The data servo support
previously noted observations including the fact that, for some reason, warm
season tallgrasses established most successfully on the two foot depth sand
over clay plot rather than the three foot plot which would have been
expected. It is possible that different levels of compaction resulting from
plot preparation work may have affected the result. A similar experiment was
initiated in spring, 1986 on actual mine backfill . It will be important for
Coors to closely monitor the newly established plot on an annual basis in
order to record trends and to allow for reliable interpretation of observed
results.
Attachment(s)
/iml
4622F
I
423 Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman Street Denver, Colorado 80203 Tel.
