2000/2001 Affected Land
It is not expected that during the next year any additional land will be disturbed that
has not already been disturbed. Mining is proceeding into the bottom of the slope below Peak
f/3 and has been fully extended into the south end of the quarry. Mining in the south area of
the quarry has begun. A yellowish colored limestone that is marginally good for concrete
aggregate is being marketed for landscape purposes. White limestone underlying the yellow
limestone will be entered in the next year. Areas to be mined in the next year will be similar
to chose mined in the previous year.
2001/2002 Affected Land
The amount of affected land may not increase in the next year. The location of the
mining may shift slightly northward at the base of the backwall. The only way the amount of
affected land may increase would be if the final approval for the layback is completed and the
USFS authorizes Castle to proceed on their land. It cannot be determined at this time
whether that will occur or not, however, it is more likely i[ will be approved than not.
AMENDMENT IN DEVELOPMENT PROCESS
Although it has been under review and consideration for a number of years, mostly
gathering baseline information needed for feasibility studies, the layback amendment is now
in development. This amendment, being prepared by Banks and Gesso, will involve a plan to
mine a short distance back into the USFS land west of the quarry. This will allow removal of
the unstable limestone remaining on the face of the quarry and allow sculpting the mountain
face to make it more attractive. This concept has been presented to City Council, the County
Commissioners, the Forest Service, and numerous homeowner's groups. It has received
almost unanimous support. Recent discussions with the Division answered some important
questions and laid the groundwork for completion and submittal of the amendment later this
year.
UPDATE 2001: This amendment was approved on March 15, 2001. However,
USFS approval has to be acquired. The Environmental Assessment (EA) is nearing
completion and should be released shortly after the anniversary date.
Castle Concrete 2001 Annual Report M-77-211 Pikeview Quarry Page 5 of 5
