sample3 since water quality results would show the effects of evaporation and
- stock use and could not be used to evaluate potential mine impacts. The 1994
samples and most of the previous water quality samples were analyzed by ACZ
Laboratories, Inc. Steamboat Springs, ~, a USEPA certified laboratory. This
report includes data collected specifically to meet requirements of the Division
of Minerals and Geology (DNG), as well as data collected to meet requirements
of the Colorado Wastewater Discharge Permit System (NPDES permit). A list of
all monitoring stations within the angle-of~3raw of the mines is presented as
Table 5. No new stations were added to Table 5 as a result of mining that
occurred in 1994.
NPDES M1NI7oRING POINTS
The mine has six NPDES discharge monitoring points (see Map No.'s 4-1, 8-lA, and
8-3). All six points were ~ronitored in aocardance with permit requirements
during periods of discharge. Three of the six discharge points experienced
discharge during 1994. Point 001, consisting of effluent from a wastewater
treataent facility, discharged continuously throughout the year. Points 002 and
• 006, sediment ponds below the East mine facilities and at the west mine
respectively also had reported discharge. Copies of the DMR cover letters
provided to the Colorado Cepartment of Health (CDOH) and Envimnrrental
Protection Agency are included in the data summaries following this narrative.
A total of three NPDES permit limitation exceedences were recorded and reported
throughout the year. lko exceedences were a result of not meeting the minimum
perrent removal criteria for BDD at outfall 001 in May and September although
the maxvmmiallowable effluent BOD concentration was within permit limitations.
A permit amendment deleting the 858 m;n;nnim removal criteria was approved
effective October 1, 1994. The third exceedence was a result of not meeting the
thirty day average effluent BOD concentration for outfall 001 during the iconth
of July because of a mechanical failure of the aeration equipment. The
equipment was repaired and the BOD concentration values were reestablished
within permit limits by the end of July.
• OVESt C,3t0UDIDiVmZER MOdiITORING WELLS
Groundwater monitoring wells BO1 through B08 are situated in the vicinity of the
East Mine facilities (see Map No. 8-lA). Well B07 was monitored for annual
2
