- 2 -
1.2 PURPOSE OF THE STUDY
The purpose of the study was to conduct necessary geo-
technical and hydrological evaluations required for the de-
sign of the initial waste rock pile; the results of our work
would assist ARCO Coal Company in obtaining necessary permits
for the construction of the initial waste rock pile. This
basically involves satisfying the regulatory requirements of
the CMLRB for coal mining in the relevant areas of geotechni-
cal engineering, surface water hydrology, and ground water
hydrology.
As definitive data on the physical properties of the
waste material become available only after the mining commence-
ment and as data on the foundation material properties are
limited, the design recommendations of this report are of a
preliminary character. They will have to be verified when
testing of actual waste material can be performed and when
data on physical properties of the foundation material are
obtained; this will be accomplished during the Phase 2 of our
studies when the ground water monitoring system will be in-
stalled and the foundation material investigated.
1.3 METHOD OF THE STAY
Data on the site geology, hydrology and the physical
properties of the foundation material developed during pre-
vious studies at the Mt. Gunnison mine were collected and re-
viewed; an appropriate set of these data has been used for our
analyses and design recommendations. When site-specific data
were not available, data from the literature and our own ex-
perience were used for the same purpose.
cEO++voao conw~nNC, iNC.
