The factor of safety against deep- <br />seated failures of the waste material is higher. <br />The case of the waste pile constructed at a slope of <br />1.0 (v) 2.0 (h) is indicated to have an acceptable safety <br />factor (greater than 1.50) for the case of a waste material <br />composed principally of sandstone, for which a safety factor <br />of 1.52 was calculated. For a sandstone/shale mixture, the <br />calculated safety factor falls to an unacceptable 1.41, and <br />decreases further to 1.30 for a pile composed of shale at <br />this configuration. <br />If the waste rock pile is constructed at a slope of <br />1.0 (v) 2.25 (h), calculated safety factors are 1.60 for <br />a sandstone pile, 1.57 for a sandstone/shale mixture, and <br />1.46 for a pile composed principally of shale.
