Larimer County Commissioners
' Page 2
March 14, 1988
this region is affected by loss of sub-irrigation water in this
manner.
We also have very serious concerns about the mosquito problem
that will come with the reclamation of the property into ponds in
the future. As you know, ponds are breeding grounds for
mosquitos. Larimer County has been spraying this area for
several years because of the increased occurrences of
encephalitis cases due to the mosquito problem. This is an
agricultural area with horses and other livestock and the spread
of encephalitis can be very threatening to the animal population.
We do not feel that Sterling's proposed mining operation
' extension to the north is compatible with the present land use in
this area. The surrounding properties are all homes and farms
which have been successfully operated for many years and all
would suffer from the extension northward of the Sterling mining
' proposal.
With Sterling already having hundreds of acres to the south of
this property that they are not yet mining, we do not feel that
destroying this property permanently is necessary since the
property can be used for many other purposes besides an open
pond, which is to no one's benefit. Current zoning indicates the
' property can be used for such uses as farming, golf ccurse,
veterinary clinic/hospital, low impact residential sutdivision as
well as many others, all of which would be impossible if this
' land was turned into a pond.
Because of the extensive mining already existing in this area,
' when future reclamation is completed, this entire area will be a
vast expanse of useless ponds. We would like to see this
practice stopped.
' With these concerns in mind, we hope that you will suF~port us in
our opposition to the expansion of a mining operation into this
' area.
Sincerely, ,

David Slatten Ginger Slatten
i
1
1
