• 2.7.4 2002 Revegetaldon
Charts 14 and 15 and Tables 16 and 17 exhibit the average seedling density and woody plant
density found on the six units (EP037, EP042, EP043, FA001, FA002, and FA003) that were one year of
age when evaluated in 2003. EP037 was seeded in 2001 and then reseeded in 2002, while EP042 and
EPO43 were seeded for the first time in fall of 2002. The three fire areas (FA001, FA002, and FA003)
were acddentally burned in the summer of 2002 and then seeded in the fall of 2002. Seedling
emergence data revealed an average of 1.04 perennial seedlings per square foot across all six areas
wmbined. An average density of 0.76 was attributed to perennial gresses, while 0.17 seedlings per
square foot were from perennial forts and 0.10 seedlings were attributed to shrubs. Typically, 1
emergent per square foot is considered modest seeding success for standard grassland revegetation, 2 to
4 emergents is reasonably good suaess, and 5 or more is considered excellent. On occasion, it takes
two or three years before this level of emergence is attained, as soil and climatic conditions must be
conducive for seeds to break dormancy.
Annual bromes exhibited an average of 2.2 plants per square foot (with the highest levels being in
FA002) and annual forts, especially Russian thistle, contributed an average of 5.0 seedlings per square
• foot. The density of emergent woody plants was also determined from the sampling quadrats and
revealed an average of 4,429 shrub seedlings per acre ranging from zero in EP037 and FA001 to over
12,000 in EP042.
The fire areas show reasonably good take by the seeded grasses and the burned Gambel oak and
servicebercy are resprouting well. Dense patches of noxious weeds are found where the fire areas meet
the berms along the haul roads. Annual bromes are dense in places within the fire areas (especially
FA002). Widespread use of the herbicide Oust or Plateau for control is recommended in FA002 and spot
use i5 recommended for FA001 and FA003.
•
rconnecon Fiiergy co. i Colawyo Mine Page 87 Revegetatlon Monttoring -2003
