,.
. III IIIIIIIIIIIIIIII ~
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
Davitl H. Getches. Executive Director
~~
MINED LAND RECLAMATION DI\
DAVID C. SHELTON, Director
Richard D Lamm
Governor
April 24, 1986
Mr. Vern Pfannenstiel
Peabody Coal Company
10375 East Harvard Avenue, Suite 400
Denver, Colorado 80231
Re: Se~nec~~' II Annual Hydrologic Report - File Ho. C-005-80
(/~/L~/
Dear Mr °--r; a:,,;r=+' ~1
The Division has reviewed the 1985 Annual Hydrologic Report from the Seneca II
Mine. In general, the report was well prepared, and was presented in a manner
which facilitated review.
The Division, while reviewing the AHR, generated some concerns and comments
which are outlined below.
Ground water
1. Well GW-S45P1, A Wolf Creek Coal completion well, has lost about
80 feet of head in 16 months. This well is located on the southeast side of
the low Creek Anticline, and would not have been expected to have been
impacted by mining.
To help quantify the impact in the vicinity of well GW-S45P1, Peabody Coal
Company (PCC) should immediately incorporate water level measurements at wells
GW-S40WC and GW-S41WC into the approved monitoring plan. By intensifying the
Wolf Creek Coal monitoring, the Division expects to determine if the head loss
noted at well GW-S45P1 is a local phenomenon, or is an aerially extensive
trend.
~'h2'. Due to the growing concern of salt loading in Twentymile Park, the
Division believes that it is appropriate at this time to more fully quantify
the effects of spoil discharges to Fish Creek via its unnamed tributary ("Cow
Camp Creek"). The Division will require the following revision to the
hydrologic monitoring program be initiated by PCC at the Seneca II Mine:
The "004 spring", when "Cow Camp Creek" is flowing below surface station
SW-S2-6, should be monitored biweekly for flow and field parameters a-7`~`~'o
(temperature, pH, and specific conductivity).
In addition, site SW-S2-6 should be monitored for flow and field parameters
immediately before or after the measurements are made at "004 Spring".
423 Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman Street Denver, Colorado 80203 Tel.
