1986 RECLAMATION AREA
• The 1986 reclamation area encompasses approximately 47 acres of reclaimed pit in the
central azea of the Keenesburg Mine permit azea. The 1986 reclamation azea is composed
of three parcels (west, central, and east) separated by north-south haul road corridors.
This azea is neazly flat with a gentle slope (<1°) to the north and east. Reclamation and
coincident revegetation within this area took place in 1986. Replaced soils were sandy in
texture.
Bromus marginatus dominated the west pazcel this season. Andropogon haldii was
present and flowering but not as robust as in prior years. Calamovilfa longifolia was
relatively sparse in this parcel this season. Widely scattered individuals of Eriogortum
annuum (wild buckwheat) and Yucca glauca (yucca) were encountered. Total vegetation
cover was estimated at 55 percent.
The central parcel of the 1986 reclamation area was visually dominated by Calamovilfa
longifolia, Andropogon hallii, Bouteloua gracilis, and Nuttallia rruda (blazingstaz).
Calamovilfa longifolia is not as dominant as in past years, though Andropogon haldii is
more dominant in this parcel. In the center of the pazcel, the cool season grasses
Agropyron dasystachyum and Bromus marginatus were dominant. A small patch of
Helianthus anmeus was noted in the center of the parcel. Total cover of this parcel was
estimated at 50 percent.
The east parcel of the 1986 reclamation area has two distinct vegetation types. The
• topographically elevated area at the north end of the parcel is dominated by Calamovilfa
longifolia, Andropogon hallii and Schizachyrium scoparium, Eriogonum annuum, and
Eriogorrum effusum (buckwheat). Some Poa compressa (Canada bluegrass) was evident
under the taller graminoids, and there were patches of Panicum virgatum. In the lower
azea, at the south end of this parcel, Bromus marginatus was dominant, with contributions
by Panicum virgatum, Schizachyrium scoparium, and Andropogon hallii. Very few
weedy species were observed. No Bromus tectorum was observed. Total cover of this
pazcel was estimated at 50 percent.
Overall vegetation cover in the 1986 reclamation area was estimated at 50 percent. Total
herbaceous production was estimated at 275 g/m2 (24501b/ac). No evidence of pests or
diseases was identified in any of the 1986 reclamation area parcels.
1987 RECLAMATION AREA
The 1987 reclamation azea encompasses approximately 48 acres of reclaimed pit and
adjacent azeas in the south central azea of the Keenesburg lvfine permit azea. The 1987
reclamation area is composed of two parcels (west and east) separated by a north-south
haul road corridor. The entire 1987 reclamation azea is neazly flat with a gentle slope
(<I°) to the south and east. Reclamation and subsequent revegetation within this azea
took place in 1987. Replaced soils were generally sandy in texture.
•
-13-
