• Soil Thickness
The tluckness of soil replaced during 1996 was verified by sampling. Sample sites for the New
Horizon 2 mining area were selected systematically utilizing a 467 foot by 467 foot grid pattern.
Sites at New Horizon 2 were surveyed and staked in the field using a Geodimeter 510 total
survey station.
A 2-3/4 inch bucket auger was used at each site to excavate a pilot hole through the entire soil
strata. An abrupt boundary, defined by color and rock fragment content, typically occurred at
the soiUspoil interface. The replaced soil thickness was measured through the pilot hole
immediately after encountering the spoil.
Soil thickness was detemuned at the 17 at NH2 shown on F,xhibit 96.4. Soil thickness
information for each sample site is located on the map.
New Horizon 2 has many different soil thickness requirements as shown on Exihibit 96.6, which
is 2.05.4-4 from the current pemut.
Soil Salvage ande and Storaee
All suitable soil has been salvaged ahead of mining at New Horizon 2. Approximately 77,400
(LIFT 2), 12,900 (LIFT I), and 38,300 (IvIIXED) cubic yards of soil aze stored in stockpiles at
the end of 1996 as shown on Exihibit 96.7 (1996 Topsoil Balance Map). The soils were
separately stockpiled by soil types as specified by our permit.
• Cover ro
All topsoil stockpiles have been planted with the approved cover crop seed nuxture.
Weed and Pest Control Activities
Weed control was carried out in the summer and fall months of 1996. Target species included
Russian Knapweed, Canada 'Thistle, Sun Flower and Field Bindweed. Spot sparying was done
on 57 acres at NHl & NH2, see Exihibit 96.3 & 96.3A. The treated sites were small and
random. To small to plot on a map accuratcay.
