• • III IIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
STATE OF COLOiv~UU
Roy Romer, Govei
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
MINED LAND RECLAMATION DIVISION
FRED R. BANTA, Director
PATE: September 18, 1989
T0: Cathy Begej ..---,,~~ //~~
FROM: Carl Mount~~j(/I
RE: Bourg Vegetation Study,
Permit C-81-021
also measured vegetation cover this year at the Bourg (WCC) site. MLRD
findings are tentative (no statistics have been performed on the data) so
comparisons at this point are, necessarily, somewhat speculative.
Walden Coal Company (WCC),
I have reviewed the 1989 "Evaluation of Re vegetation Success at the Walden
Coal Company Mine Site" report as you requested. Cover measurements were
performed using standard optical point sampling methods along 25 meter long
transects. This method for sampling cover is acceptable. MLRD personnel have
In general, total vegetation cover and total ground cover at the mine site
look good and compare favorably with reference area data taken in 1980. I
have taken the liberty of slightly modifying and ha vi no typed the tables which
you compiled on cover values (see Tables 1 and 2). Keeping in mind that
comparisons are somewhat speculative, it is interesting to note that
Dr. Keammerer's values for total ground cover and bare soil are within 4 or 5
percent of MLRD values.
Total plant cover value differences can be attributed to times of sampling.
MLRD sampling occurred on August 30, 1989. I am assuming that Dr. Keammerer
sampled the vegetation in June or July since the report is dated July, 1989
and does not specify sample dates. If this is true, then Dr. Keanunerer would
have sampled the vegetation prior to growth season maturity and one would
expect the MLRD total plant cover value to be slightly greater than
Dr. Keammerer's value (Table 2).
215 Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman Street Denver, Colorado 80203-2273 Tel.
