iii iiiiiiiiiiii
STATE OF CUI.Ui~O
Roy Romer, Gove~
DEPARTMENT OF NATURAL RESOURCES
MINED LAND RECLAMATION DIVISION
FRED R. BANTA, Dlreetor
GATE: August 9, 1989
T0: Tony Waldron f1 \~
FROM: Bi I1 CricK ~~~ M~
RE: Colowyo (C-81-019) Request for Minor Revision to I~od:i-fy Ground Water s
Plblti_tDrin~ of Goodspring CreelgAlluvium ~
Colowyo proposed to replace existing wells 66005 and 6600N, located just
upstream and downstream respectively from the Streeter fill, with new
monitoring points in the Goodspring Creels alluvium. The new upstream well
is existing well A-3, in the southeastern corner of the permit area, and they
plan to install a new well about 1,200 feet downstream of 6600N. There will
be no change to the monitoring frequency or parameters list, so the longer
review and public comment period associated with a Technical Revision are
probably not necessary.
I agree witn the statement in the revision that samples from well 66005 may
no longer be representative of undisturbed conditions, as it is located
downgradient from Gulch A and discharge point 004. Well A-3 is located as
far upgradient as is possible in Colowyo's permit area. There is baseline
water quality data available for A-3, and it appears very similar to that of
samples from 66005.
The proposed new well would be near the downstream limit of the permit
boundary, and should serve quite well as a downgradient monitoring point.
It would be more representative of ground water leaving the permit area than
is well 6600N.
The revision does not address whether the existing monitoring wells will be
left in or reclaimed. It would be advisable to leave them in at least until
it is clear that the new wells are yielding representative samples.
/en
cc: Jim Stevens
8777E
215 Centennial Building, 1313 Sherman Street Denver, Colorado 80203-2273 Tel.
