~'
!993 Annual Report
Domtar Gypsum
Coaldale Quarry
M-77-247
The Coaldale Quarry operation has been in Temporary Cessation
Statis since 1990, following the closure of the board plant
facility located east of Florence, Colorado. During the fall
of 1990, 27 acres of overburden disposal ground and 3 acres
of gypsum fines stockpiles area were graded, contour ditched,
dnd hydromulched with a native Seed mixture, fertilizer, and
2000~k/acre of aspen fibre mulch. As is the norm at this
site, a minimal amount of grass was established on these -
sites due to the harsh conditions for seed germination and
survival. Repeat applications of seed mixture along with
straw mulch application at a rate of 4000~t/acre was started
in 1992, performed in 1993, and will continue in 1994 in
order to reapply over the 30 acres initiated in 1990. Due to
the minimal road access desired and rocky ground, the mulch
is applied by hand. Increasing amounts of grass species are
now established in the bottoms of the contour ditches and are
starting to move out of the ditches onto the ditch back
slope. Less than 3% of the front slope of the contour
ditch areas have grass cover. The repeated seeding and mulch
applications will help to promote revegetation of the contour
ditch out slope areas and the mulch will add organic material
to developing soil horizon. 1993 seed mixture list can be
found on the back of the Annual Report Form. The Seed
mixture was broadcast at a rate of 40~P/acre and mulched with
clean wheat straw applied at 4000~t/acre.
For more information and or site inspection, please contact:
Kenneth S.
