UPDATE 1999: No additional reclamation was
implemented in the last year as no land was available
to be reclaimed.
UPDATE 2000: Little additional reclamation was done
in the last year due to a lack of additional completed
land to reclaim. Replanting of other areas that were
adversely affected by slumpage during the major
April/May storm in 1999 was completed after repair of
the damages. This included replanting of several
hundred trees that were lost.
UPDATE 2001: Additional reclamation was done on the
south end of the quarry. Due to the depth of the
limestone being mined and the small amount of land
completed with mining each year, the amount of
reclamation being done within the quarry area has
decreased considerably from what it was a few years
ago. The reclamation cannot expand until the mining is
completed. Perhaps an additional acre will be
reclaimed in the next year, but it might be less or
none at all.
UPDATE 2002: Until the current phase of mining
concludes, reclamation will remain limited because the
mode of operation currently being used (as detailed in
the layback amendment) does not generate much land
suitable for reclamation until it is much further
along. Essentially all past disturbances that are no
longer used have been reclaimed. Nevertheless, a
small amount of reclamation was performed on the south
end of the quarry. Topsoil was seeded and
approximately 200 trees were planted on a small
section of land.
Affected Land
It is not expected that during the next year any additional land
will be disturbed that has not already been disturbed. Mining is
proceeding into the bottom of the slope below Peak #3 and has
been fully extended into the south end of the quarry. Mining in
the south area of the quarry has begun. A yellowish colored
limestone that is marginally good for concrete aggregate is
being marketed for landscape purposes. White limestone
underlying the yellow limestone will be entered in the next
Castle Concrete 2002 Annual Report M-77-211 Pikeview Quarry Page 6 of 7
