III IIIIIIIIIIIIIIII
999
STATE OF COLORADO
DIVISION OF MINERALS AND GEOLOGY
Department of Natural Resources
1313 Sherman St., Room 215
Denver, Colorado 80203
Phone: 13031 866-3567
FAX: (3031 832-8106
DATE: December 5, 2994
TO: Jim Pendleton
FROM: Erica Crosby ~ J~
RE: Roadside Portal Mines (C-81-041)
Subsidence Issues
~~
DEPARTMENT OF
NATURAL
RESOURCES
Roy Romer
Governor
lames 5. Lochhead
Executive Direcio~
Michael 8. Long
Division Director
Jim, as I mentioned to you last week Powderhorn is now mining at
the Roadside North Portal Area (formerly known as the Cameo Mine).
Portions of the North Portal area are included in their 5-year mine
plan that was approved in January of 1993. After our discussion,
it appears that this area was never review for subsidence related
issues.
Attached, please find some old aerial photographs of that region,
a USGS topo map and the proposed mine plan map. Harry Ranney will
be flying over this area sometime this week. I will provide you
with the photos once they are developed. Since they are already
mining, I am requesting that you look over the potential subsidence
issues related to the North Portal Area as soon as possible. It
appears that they will be mining under Coal Creek and Jerry Creek
in 1995.
One final note, Powderhorn was stipulated in their permit to
conduct a semi-annual surface visual inspection encompassing the
areas to be undermined. These features must be documented and
photographed for historic record keeping purposes and submitted as
a report to the Division by December 31 of each year. This visual
inspection will be conducted at the North Portal Area in 1995.
Please let me know by January 13, 1994 if additional monitoring is
prudent, or if you have any concerns that need to be addressed by
Powderhorn. Thanks.
Enclosure (s)
c:\roadside\941205
