ANNUAL REPORT RECEDED
Operator: United Companies of Mesa County MAY 2 2 2003
Operation: United/Norwood Pit Division of Minerals and Geology
File Number: M-1988-037
Anniversary Date: May 25, 2003
The Norwood Pit has been active during the past year. Activities have included gravel
mining and processing, gravel product storage and gravel product sales. Processing
included gravel crushing, screening and gravel washing. A portable asphalt plant was on
site at the Norwood Pit during 2002.
Gravel mining activity continued in the Phase 2 area. The highwall was advanced to the
east. Gravel was also taken from the pit floor during the winter months.
Trees have been removed from the next area to be mined, east of the existing active mine
face. Topsoil has been removed (and stockpiled) from this area. Topsoil was transported
to the large existing storage pile located at the Phase 2 area and a new stockpile at the
Phase 4 area. Subsoil was also removed from the area to the east of the active highwall.
Subsoil from this area has been stored in a new stockpile that is located in the Phase 4
area. Fine material that was removed from the wash ponds has also been stockpiled to the
north of the existing topsoil stockpile in the Phase 2 area.
As the active mining Face continues to move to the east, the road that allows access to
the undisturbed areas to the east will be moved to the east. As the road is moved, grading
of the pit slopes will be done to establish the approved final topography.
