Plant carmKaiities surrounding the Henderson Mill are potentially fragile
because of the high elevation and short gracing season at the site. Climax is
determined to keep detrimental impacts to soil and vegetation of the area at a
minim:n. Therefore, a study was initiated in 1976 to obtain baselines chemical
data an soils and vegetation from areas surrounding the mill and tailing pond.
Sartpling of soils and vegetation was conducted prior to production of Most at
the mill. Similar data were to be obtained again at about three-yeaz
intervals to monitor chemical levels of soil and vegetation to determune
whether changes had occurred. If significant changes occurred in either soils
or vegetation, these changes would be related to possible emissions from the
mill or fugitive dust from the tailing pond. If potentially detrimental
changes occurred and if these changes appeared to be correlated with activity
at the mill, the monitoring program should detect such changes in time to
allay for necessary alterations to the mining plans to mitigate detrimental
environmental problems.
PURPOSE AND OBJECPIVFS
The purpose of this study was to collect soil and vegetation samples from
the same locations in 1985 as were sampled in 1976 and 1979. Data froth
chemical analyses of these sartples were to be compared with data derived from
the 1976 and 1979 samples to determine whether any significant change:a had
occurred since the null began operating. Data for soils and vegetati~an near
the Henderson mill site were compared with one control area near Ute I?ass that
is upwind sane distance from the mdll.
