~~.
\~
~~
Table 3-B. Seed Mixes Applied on Areas
Revegetated in 1985
Two seed mixes were applied on reclaimed areas in 1985. Seed mix 1 was used on upland
drier sites and south facing exposures. Seed mix 2 was used in drainages or north facing
exposures. Up to 25 percent of the reclaimed areas were seeded with seed mix 2, while
the majority of the area was seeded with seed mix 1.
A new drill seeder based on the Laird rangeland drill was manufactured for Peabody in
1985. The drill was constructed with two seed boxes, one for large seed and one for
small seed. This allowed the drilling of the large seed and broadcasting of the smaller
seed. Seed mixes were thus split into large seed and small seed components and bagged
seperately by the seed dealer. All seeding rates are presented as drilled rates.
Seed Mix 1 - Large Seed Component
Species
nrillnri RTTP
Scientific Name Common Name PLS lbs/Ac
Agropyron dasystachyum v. dasystachyum Thickspike Wheatgrass 2.00
Agropyron inte rmedium Intermediate Wheatgrass 1.00
Agropyron dasystachyum v, riparium Streamba nk Wheatgrass 1,00
Agropyron smithii Western Wheatgrass 2,00
Agropyron inerme Beardless Bl uebunch Wheatgrass 2.00
Agropyron tra chycaulum Slender Wheatgrass 2.00
Ceratochloa margi na to Mountain Brome 2.00
Dactylic glomerata Orchardgrass 0.50
Elymus cinereus Basin Wildrye 1.00
Elymus ~u~ nceus Russian Wildrye 1,00
Festuca ovina v. ovina Sheep Fescue 0.50
Stipa viridula Creen Needlegrass 2.00
Cercoca rpus ledifloius Curlleaf Mountain Mahogany 0.10
Purshia tridentata Antelope Bitte rbrush 0.20
Atripl ex canescens Fourwi ng Sal tbush 0.13
Ceratoides Janata Winte rfat 0.07
Rhus tril obata Skunkbush Sumac 0.08
Hedysarum bo reale Utah Sweetvetch 0.05
Penstemon strictus Rocky Mountain Penstemon 0.05
Li num lewi sii Lewis Flax 0.05
Total Large Seed 17.73 PLS lbs/Ac
Seed Mix 1 - Small Seed Component
Phleum pratense
Poa ampla
Poa compressa
Astragalus titer
Medica go sativa
Melilotus officinalis
Achilles lanulosa
Timothy 0.10
Big Bluegrass 0.50
Canada Bluegrass 0.10
Cicer Milkvetch 1.00
Alfalfa 0.50
Yellow Sweetclover 0.50
Western Yarrow 0.05
3-5
