BLUE RIBBON COAL COI~ANY
~~~~1~~~
JAN 2 f 1988
1987 HYDROL06IC REPORT
(~ECLAM1AT ON UIpVIRI~f~
JANUARY 1, 1987 T11ROU6H DECEMBER 31, 1987
The Blue Ribbon Coal Company went into permanent cessation in 1986 and the
majority of reclamation was completed that year. A minor amount of grading
was done in 1987 on the portal bench to improve drainage. This area was
seeded in the fall of 1987.
To reduce the monitoring requirements during permanent cessation, technical
revision TR02 was applied for and granted in July. A revision to our CDPS
permit CO-0033553 has been applied for to reclassify the pond discharge to
a post mining status. This revision is expected to be approved by the second
quarter of 1988.
SURFACE PATER
An estimate of total flow in Hubbard Creek was not done this year due to
• a reduction to quarterly flow. measurements. The following table shows the
flow, pH and conductivity by quarters for 1987 compared to the same months'
averages from 1982 through 1986.
Upper Hubbard Creek Lower Hubbard Creek
arter Paraoeter Are 1987 Ave 1987
1st Flow 40.2 cfs. 12 - -
pH 8.0 7.7 8.0 7.3
Cond. 148N 195 195 237
2nd Flow 58 8.5 - -
pH 8.2 8.6 6.2 8.6
Cond. 143 318 156 328
3rd Flow 12.6 4.0 - -
pH 8.0 8.2 8.2 8.1
Cond. 216 299 251 311
4th Flow 14.8 6.0 - -
pH 8.2 8.3 8.3 8.3
• Cond. 159 2'18 197 238
According to the local .Colorado Nater Commissioner, stream flow in the area
was lower than the past four years but slightly higher than the long term
average. This table shows the lower flow. The table also shows the typical
. reaction of the creek to lower flows - higher pH and conductivity.
