2001
Annual Report
Mott Gravel Pit
M-1980-049
Operations at the Mott Gravel Pit during 2001 were limited to evaluation of the remaining gravel
resource in and adjacent to the permit azea.
Three test holes were dug by Lafazge Corporation within the permit area and one on land owned
by another party to the south of the_permit azea- Each was about 15 feet square and 23 feet deep. After
testing; all-material was returned to the holes with topsoil at the surface.
Lafarge found the resource adequate in quality and quantity for a State Highway 92 resurfacing
project that was to begin last summer. Based on an agreement with us, they bid on the job and won the
contract. Then Montrose County refused to allow them to set a temporary batch plant on the site on a
timely basis. Lafazge ended up using material from a pit neaz Hotchkiss and having to haul it 18 miles
further.
Had Fafazge been able to use the material, it would have depleted the gravel deposit and fully
restored the permit azea so we could have used it for irrigated agricultural purposes.
In light of this setback, our intention is to evaluate other options during 2002.
