Despite three consecutive years of grouse activity at this site, it cannot be defined as a lek until
• both male and female grouse are positively identified.
On 26 April, one male blue grouse (Dendrogapus obscunss) was seen displaying from
atop a berm along the Seneca II-W haul road in NE'/a SW'/a Section 22, TSN, R87W. One
male blue grouse was seen in the same area in 1999, and two were seen there in 1998.
GOLDEN EAGLE NESTING
A cluster of five golden eagle nests exist on a cliff face above Hubberson Gulch in
Sections 16 and 21, TSN, R88W (Exhibit 1). Two of those nests were first identified in April
2000. On 26 April, eagles were seen incubating at the south-most of the five nests. This
territory has been monitored since 1996 and was active in three of those five years (1996,
1997, and 2000).
SANDHILL CRANE ACTIVITY
No sandhill cranes or suitable crane habitat were found during the pedestrian survey on
• 27 April. However, on 26 April, eight cranes were seen flying over the permit area in SW'/a
SE'/a Section 16, TSN, R88W.
•
2000 Seneca 11-W Mine Wildlife Monitoring Page 9
