<br /> <br />CF&I STEEL COkPORATION <br />CANON DOLOMITE QUARRY <br />File No. 77-376 <br />ANNUAL REPORT to the MLRD <br />September 1987 - September 1988 <br />(1) CF&I (Fountain Sand & Gravel) operated the Canon <br />the report period, however, no additional acres <br />active mining operations are restricted to areas <br />past mining. No additional acres, previously <br />disturbed during the remaining life of the quarry. <br /> <br />Dolomite Quarry during <br />were disturbed. All <br />already disturbed by <br />undisturbed, will be <br />(2) Lower Fines Disposal Area lil was graded to final contours and seeded <br />during the week of Sept. 21, 1987. This area covers approximately 6 <br />acres. The pre-law quarry area above the office was also seeded at this <br />time. Erosion control and maintenance is continuing as required. <br />(3) Approximately 4 acres along the north and south ends of the quarry floor <br />are currently being graded to final contours. These areas have fines as <br />a topsoil substitute. Seeding should begin this fall. <br />(4) The species planted include Crested & Thickspike wheatgrass, Sideoats <br />Grama, Russian Wildrye, Indian Ricegrass, Fourwing Saltbush Palmer <br />Penstemon and Yellow Sweetclover as per the approved seed mixture. <br />Planting ocurred during the last weeks of September, 1987. <br />ficrc~( ~ a~~r~ <br />(6) Approximately 200 lbs 0-46-0 fe ilizer was lied to the reseeded <br />areas. An additi ons of compost was applied which will _act_ <br />as a fertilizer and soil onaitioner. <br />(6) The revegetation of the roadcuts which were seeded in 1986 and appeared <br />marginal the first year have improved markedly after the compost was <br />applied last year. Though much of the cover species are legumes and <br />annuals, same grasses are becoming established. The areas seeded this <br />last year are on the average not as dense as the roadcuts, however they <br />appear to be doing considerably better than the roadcuts in their first <br />year. Poor moisture conditions during the winter and early spring appear <br />too have lowered the germination rate. Late summer rains have helped <br />invading species, some of which are grases. The second season should <br />show improvement. <br />(7) Mining will continue at a very reduced rate for some years to come, <br />however all future mining will be restricted to those areas previously <br />disturbed by mining. No undisturbed areas will be affected by future <br />mining. <br />(8) This report is current as of September 1, 1988. <br />
