STATE OF COLORADO
DIVISION OF MINERALS AND GEOLOGY
Department of Natural Resources
1313 Sherman SL, Room 215
Denver, Colorado 80203
Phone: (303) 866-3567
FAX: (303) 832-8106
DIVISION OF
MINERALS
GEOLOGY
RECLAMATION
MINING•SAFETY
Bill Owens
Governor
December ] 0, 2002 Greg E. Box 670
Hayden, CO 81639
Re: Seneca II Mine (Permit No. C-SO-005)
2001 Annual Hydrology Report Review
Deaz Mr. Jones:
The Division has reviewed Seneca Coal Company's (BCC's) 2001 Annual Hydrology Report
(AHR) For the Seneca II Mine. The frequency of data collection is in compliance with the
approved monitoring plan contained in the permit document. SCC did an excellent job at
obtaining the required groundwater level measurements and groundwater analytical data. Water
level measurements could not be obtained at groundwater monitoring sites GW-S22-S, GW-S23-
S, and GW-S24-S because these wells were dry. With the exception of two wells, all required
groundwater samples were collected and results reported for the appropriate pazameter list. Wells
GW-S25-S and GW-S42P1-LWI were not sampled for the 2001 Water Year due to a lack of
water in the well casings.
The Division has the following comment regazding the collection and reporting of spoils spring
data.
1. Surface water quality data presented in Appendix D does not contain the required spoils
spring analytical data for Water Year 2001. It is apparent that the samples were collected and
analyzed because they are listed in the title page for Appendix D and they are discussed on pages
18 and 19 of the AHR. Please submit spoil spring water quality reports for Spoil Springs #1
through #lOC for insertion into the AHR.
Surface water samples were collected and analyzed from all other required surface water sites.
However, SCC could not meet the required frequencies for the majority of sites due to low flow
conditions. Only one sample was collected from surface water drainage sites SW-S2-3, 5, 10,
11, 12, and 13 due to insufficient water. One sample was collected from each of these locations
in either April or May as opposed to the required triannual and/or monthly water sample.
