In the last year 25 to 30 acres of
the Upland Mining area has been placed in either final reclamation or prepared for seeding.
Annual Report Maps: There are three annual report maps included in this report. Map 1 provides the
information for the South Lowland area which is basically a stream bed operation. The area of affected land has
indistinct and difficult to determine boundaries, especially in the Process #1 area. Therefore, the affected land
area of 29.24 .acres may be somewhat high. The southern half of the indicated affected land has very little
disturbance.
Map 2 shows the entire affected land area in the Upland Mining Area, but should be examined only
with reference to Map 3 which shows the different types of affected land as an enlarged detail of the general
affected land ~:ategory on Map 2. As Map 3 shows, approximately a third of the affected land was placed in
revegetation in 1998 or is ready for seeding in 1999.
Affected Lands: The South Lowland Mining area had most of the disturbance in the same areas that were
previously disturbed. A small amount of additional disturbance was created further to the south than was done
previously, but it is all within the designated mining area. The other mining area further up the stream was not
affected. In the next year most of the mining in the South Lowland area will occur within the existing affected
land area. It is possible the more southerly area would be operated if product demand is high enough.
In the Upland Mining area the disturbance continued to expand to the south when compared to
previous reports. Most of the early disturbances in this area were placed in revegetation in 1998, as discussed
below. Some peripheral areas on the crest of the hill have been recently topsoiled and will be planted in the near
future. Of the estimated 74.8 acres of affected land, only about 51 acres is actually involved in some form of
extractive activity. The rest is either in full reclamation or will soon be in full reclamation.
In the Upland Mining area, a zone to the south of the current area being stripped (10.3 acres near the
road) will be the next area to be mined. Although there are 9 acres indicated in that future mining zone it is
unlikely that much would be disturbed in the next year. The 9 acre area is indicated though because the
demand for material is currently quite high and it is possible that much land would be needed.
Revegetation: Approximately 10.3 acres in the Upland Mining area was placed in revegetation in the last year.
This was seeded in the summer of 1998. Shortly after seeding precipitation was high and therefore establishment
was unusually good for a summer planting. Although the vegetation density is low due to the youth of the
vegetation, grass establishment is excellent with strong root systems. A considerable amount of additional growth
has developed from propagules (seed and plant materials) in the soil. This is particularly true of Blue Grama,
some of which even flowered and set seed in 1998. The winter of 1998/1999 has been quite dry and therefore,
unless moisture increases, expansion of individual plants in 1999 may be limited. The seedling density however
is excellent and under good growing conditions should generate excellent cover after a few years of growth. This
area will be w;ttched closely for weed invasion as it is in a very susceptible condition for invasion to occur. The
soils appear quite rich and therefore could provide an excellent growth medium for weeds.
The higher areas that are ready for seeding have been nearly completed with topsoiling. By early summer
there should be 25 to 30 acres of this part of the permit placed in reclamation.
Centennial Materials 1999 Annual Report M-88-044 Coal Creek Resources Page 1 of 1
